Turning Wealth Into Freedom: A Family’s Journey Around The World

 

Here’s an example of a family who swapped long hours and stress for freedom, adventure, and connection, and how we helped them turn a bold dream into a confident plan. 

The Challenge  

Running a successful business with several employees, our clients were doing “well on paper” but life felt hard and at times they were swamped. Long hours, injuries as a result of a business focused on physical labour and the pressure of managing staff and contracts, left them with the frustrating sense that family time was slipping away.  

They came to us asking a big question: Could we make life simpler and more fulfilling?  

Their dream was bold. They wanted to sell the business, simplify their lives, and travel the world with their two young children. But could they afford to step away from work, educate their children on the road, and still have financial security when they returned?  

Their goals

  • Reduce the stress of business ownership.  
  • Spend more time together as a family – this was a non-negotiable!  
  • Travel the world for up to four years with their children.  
  • Understanding whether this was achievable, without harming the security of their financial future.   

Our approach

We started with deep conversations, not about money, but about what really mattered. A family bereavement had reminded them that life is short. They wanted to prioritise experiences with their children while they were young enough to enjoy them together.  

Together, we created a structured plan, focused on achieving:  

  • Winding the business down, selling its assets and two properties – generating around £1.4 million.  
  • Sensible, evidence-based investing – to continue to build wealth steadily, that would replenish their travel and lifestyle expenditure.  
  • Cashflow planning – to reassure them that their dream was achievable and that expenditure remained within sustainable, data-backed withdrawal rates.  
  • Two-year cash buffer – to cover early travel expenses and protect against “sequencing risk” (the danger of drawing from investments during downturns).  
  • Produce sustainable income and sticking to it – £5,000 a month to cover family travel, homeschooling, and living costs.  

The outcome

The results have been remarkable.  

When we last spoke, the family were in Bali, having travelled through Europe, the Caribbean, South America, Central America, North America, Southeast Asia and Australia. The plan succeeded; we knew it would, providing them with the income needed to fund their adventures, educate their children, and give them freedom to live life differently.  

When they return to the UK, as planned, prior to their eldest reaching secondary school age, they’ll rent a home, continue home schooling their children and restart the business, but this time with hours they are in control of. This income, alongside the £45k per year that their portfolio will continue to comfortably produce, will fund their lifestyle whilst allowing them to spend vital time together as a young family. Their financial plan still allows them to retire at 55, with the financial peace of mind in knowing they can continue to live their dream life, without concern of running out of money during their lifetime, no matter what.   

Most importantly, they’ve had the chance to live their dream now, not “one day”.
